With its nickname being the Bluegrass State, it's no surprise that in Kentucky, bluegrass is a favorite musical genre. This important cultural art descended from Appalachian folk music. What differentiates bluegrass is its incorporation of jazz and blues rhythms into the folksy ballads. Another unique feature of bluegrass is that it showcases its acoustic instruments more through solos than with the blending of harmonies. The dance heritage of Kentucky remains strong, thanks in part to groups like the Kentucky Dance Association. Founded in 1991, the goal of the association is the preservation of folk dance in the Bluegrass State. To do so, the Kentucky Dance Association regularly holds events open to the public and hosts a branch campus in Elizabethtown to spread the word.
